Colophon
How this is made
Every page here is a query against one database. A text is stored as plain, addressable prose; the italics, the small caps, the footnotes and the marginalia are all spans over that prose rather than markup inside it. That is what lets one document render as a web edition and as a paged book without ever being written twice.
The typography follows Mark Argetsinger’s A Grammar of Typography: word spacing close and even, hyphenation limited to 6 / 3 / 3 with no ladder beyond three, no widows, old-style figures throughout, and emphasis exhausted through roman, italic and small caps before bold is ever reached. Running heads and folios are set in the book’s own face at text size.
Text is set in Blacker Pro; the interface in Stratos, and every label and figure in Maison Neue Mono. Book editions keep Libre Caslon and are paginated with Paged.js against real CSS Paged Media.
